The other day, I was in a meeting where the speaker was sharing about how he used to be the guy who quit everything. As soon as what he was trying got tough, he quit.
He quit football.
He quit school.
He quit jobs.
He quit relationships.
He never learned the skillset needed to STAY. To persevere. To see himself triumph in the face of adversity.
Then, some stuff happened that he could not run from, and he had to learn to show up for himself and other people.
I listened to him, and I looked for myself in his story. And, honestly, I just couldn’t find it.
I wasn’t the quitter. I was the one who SHOULD have quit. I’m the one who stayed too long at the fair. Everyone else might be dropping out, but – by god – not I.
I’m the one you could COUNT on. When the going gets tough, you want Jen.
I had my first strategic plan at 9 and revised it when I was 11. I worked that plan until I was 17 and the plan earned me a college scholarship. Then, I had a new plan, and that plan saw me graduating with honors, employed in the only recession worse than this one – blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
I did not know how or WHEN to quit, how to relinquish the field. As I stayed and tried and tried and tried (because, I’m not a quitter, after all) relationships devolved, jobs deteriorated, people around me got sicker and sicker.
And I stayed. Sometimes for DECADES.
I overstayed because I had a basic misunderstanding about the “spiritual” way I had chosen to live. For more than 23 years now, I have tried — one day at a time — to live my life in accordance with theologian Reinhold Niebuhr’s prayer, which we commonly refer to as The Serenity Prayer.
That prayer asks for three things:
the SERENITY to ACCEPT
the COURAGE to CHANGE
and, the WISDOM to KNOW the difference between these.
My mistake was this — I was trying to ACCEPT some things which I shouldn’t have. Instead, I was supposed to CHANGE those things instead. My problem was that I lacked the WISDOM to know the difference. I shared this with my friends, hoping it would help someone.
A few minutes later, a younger women spoke. I am so very grateful for this woman, because this is what she said, “I wasn’t a quitter either. I stayed in broken relationships, I stayed in dead-end jobs.”
And my heart skipped a beat. I heard the truth of the mistake I had made, encapsulated in 6 small words.
I didn’t quit you. I quit me.
And, over the years, that habit of continually denying self to make others happy, or keep the peace, or keep the children in their home, or not make waves, or pay my mortgage, or attempt to please people who simply will NOT be pleased –
–all of that, is COMPLETELY about quitting.
I QUIT the only person in the world who really, really, mattered. I quit myself!!!
Until two and a half years ago, when I ran away from home (er, went on retreat) to find myself – that commitment was the commitment to become my own best friend — to PERSEVERE on behalf of myself, because no one else on this planet had the responsibility to do that.
A couple of years later, we have Life After Tampons. My vision here is to give you the tools you need to show up for yourself, to better understand yourself and your dreams. I want to give you everything you need to have the
